April 2001

At last it looks like Spring has sprung!

This month’s letter is slightly different to previous as it contains two items from Feltwellians and very little from me. I would like to say, however, that we were sorry to lose Mr John Seymour last month. Those of you who remember John will know that he did a lot of work for the Feltwell British Legion. Last month also marked the first birthday of Feltwell’s Millennium Boy Baby. Happy birthday Taylor. As far as the website is concerned membership now stands at 113 and site 3 is well underway. This month I’ve added two extra pages, one is a second page of High Street photographs and the other is of the inside of St Mary’s Church.

Of the emails received this month two in particular caught my attention. This first is from the application of Matt Cormier and brought a smile to my lips. He lists his ten best Feltwell memories.

10. Friends - Steven Johnson sure was a good guy.

9. Soccer - This is where I really learned to play the game.

8. Old Church Grounds - Night-time hide-and-go-seek games

7. Teachers - I think his name was Mr. Davis. Regardless, he was the proudest Welshman I have ever met.

6. Mrs. Leverage - I know she is a teacher, but she deserves her own category just for being awesome.

5. Praying in school - As an American school teacher I can tell you how much I miss that part of the school day.

4. Collecting/trading soccer stickers and the game of marbles.

3. School Dentist - Just kidding! Wanted to see if you were still reading.

2. Two year Conker champion 1982 & 1983. To this day I am still unbeaten.

1. Kissing Claire Leverage. She was my girlfriend when we were 10 years old.

I’m sure that all of you who are ex-Feltwell Feltwellians could also produce a list of Top Ten Feltwell memories. And there’s no time like the presence so make your list now and send it to me by return. I’m thinking that I might start a separate page of Feltwell memories on the website.

The second Feltwellian contributions comes from Valerie Best with this lovely historical footnote.

I was talking to my dad (Geoffey Granger) today and he had a bit of Feltwell history I thought you should be made aware of. He told me that the oak tree that is planted in front of the oak hotel (or pub as it used to be when I was still living there) was planted by him and not Mr George Barns! He told me that on the particular day it was planted, Mr Barns had to run home and get some string to use as a measuring tool to establish the centre of the garden before planting the tree. He laid the seedling (as it was at that time ) down on the ground and left in pursuit of the string. My dad obtained a tape measure in the mean time and planted the beautiful oak that you now see growing there! So (Goegie as he is fondly referred to) did not plant that oak tree at all!

Family names being researched this month include Walkers (again), Hollux and Halls. See the Feltwellian list for contact names.
