December 2005

Better late than never! Been extremely busy over the last two weeks both at work and at home. We had a Quiz Night to organise last weekend which took up most of Saturday and I took Sunday off because my early migraine symptoms told me to rest. Clearly I've reached the age at which I now listen to my body, unlike my son who has had 6 hours sleep in the last 24 and is currently "crashed out" on the sofa! I'm sure many of us have been there and got the tee-shirt to prove it. Enough of this personal rambling!

The last month has seen 5 new members join the Feltwellians, one because his name is Feltwell, two because they have lived here and two who have ancestral links to the village. Welcome to you all. I'm pleased to say that the new web address is starting to appear in Google results lists (must get round to submitting the new url to some other search engines) and that the hits counter seems to be rising, albeit slowly, but then this is a very unique and may I say select, corner of the web. One of our new American members lived in 1 Trenchard Square and whilst processing her request I had the thought that this house, and the rest of the Square, has its own unique history of residents, perhaps one of the longest in the village because it has been used by both RAF and USAF personnel who change/changed with great frequency. However, this is one crazy idea I'm not going to take any further. There will NOT be a page devoted to Trenchard Square.

Life in Feltwell has quietly ticked along these last few months but I must bring you up-to-date on two items I've mentioned before. The proposed housing development behind the Old School has been refused by the planning authority but the Parish Council has approved the plans for the new development of starter homes on the Wilton Road allotment land. Now all we want is for the planners to say okay, the Department for the Environment to say okay, the RSPB to not lodge an objection, The Countryside Commission to say okay and the sun not to burn out! In short, there is still a long way to go. The Borough Council have told us that they will be improving 2 of our 3 bus stops in order to comply with the Disability Act. We have asked them why they stopped at 2.

Long standing members may recall that Feltwell resident Richard Hunt ran in the London Marathon a couple of years ago. Well, the silly fool is doing it again! This time he is running for the Stroke Association and has the target of raising £1800, £300 more than he raised in 2004. The fund raising has already begun with his wife and friends selling home-made biscuits and sweets at the school Christmas Fayre. Needless to say Sue and I will be running a Quiz Night which is booked in for late January so all Feltwellian Feltwell residents (if you see what I mean) are invited to attend. Having had a father-in-law who suffered from stroke I know how debilitating this conditions is and how devastating its effects on family and friends.

And finally; December 1st saw what has rapidly become a tradition in the village, the turning on of Christmas lights on the outside of peoples' homes. There seems to be more than ever this year. Some condemn the waste of energy and I suppose they have a point, but they do "cheer up" the end of a dismal December evening drive home.

Attached is a very small image of the latest "Decorated Christmas Tree" festival in St Mary's Church.

Until next time, have yourselves a lovely Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.
