Written Records

February 2006

It's February half-term and I'm taking the opportunity to catch up on a few things, not the least of which is the website and this newsletter. There have been communication issues as regards publishing the website but hopefully all is now sorted. The problem was at my hosts end and, apparently, it took a bit of tracking down. Only time will tell if things are genuinely better. If you do find any problems with the site please let me know. I'll be updating this week with a couple of school class photographs, one of which shows the mural of Sir Edmund de Moundeford in the school hall before it was painted over last summer. I'm on the look out for any (Christmas) cards from Feltwell as these have been available on and off over the years so if you have any in your possession please contact me.

The Wissington archive is now scanned and I'm starting to design the new web. What we need now is an authority on sugar beet growing and processing from the early days of the factory.  I know a couple of websites based around other factories already exist but a home-grown expert would be better than having to rely on someone from Lincolnshire.

The new starter home development continues to make slow progress. The latest twist has come from the Housing Association who now need a little bit more land, which meant we had to go back the District Valuer for a new valuation and pay a second fee! If a sod is turned before this time next year I'll be amazed. Next step, obtain permission from the Government to sell some allotment land.

Petty vandalism has increased recently but the worst example has been the spraying of the Youth Centre wall with graffiti which will cost in the area of £250 to even try to get it removed. The turning of road signs is another popular pastime. But it's not all doom and gloom, the bus shelters are still in one piece.

There was a beautiful rainbow over Feltwell the other day which gave me the idea for an additional "Special Photo Set" for the website.  Have any of you got a photo of a Feltwell rainbow for the website? In the magazine last month I asked for a similar thing but went even further. I offered pride of place on the front cover of the magazine for any reader's photo of Feltwell. I got one reply, but I won't give up! If any of you have any Feltwell photographs which could adorn the front cover please send them to me. Photographs of events, people, places, anything Feltwell related will do.

New Feltwellians this last month include Chris Chater, a descendent of the Brookes who lived in Primula Cottage in the High Street, Arthur Neighbor who is descended from Dr. Philip Morgan Neighbour who practiced in Feltwell from 1923-1924, Pamela Beck who lived here until she was 18 and still has parents and friends here and finally, Paul Campbell who is tracing the Willett family.
