March 2005

The snow is melting! Our snowy winter lasted all of one day, Friday 4th March, but what chaos it caused because it came down thick and fast from 7am until 9am on to un-gritted roads at sub-zero temperatures. I averaged 12mph in order to get to work and when I arrived only 200 students out of 980 had turned up for school. At Methwold High they closed for the day but most of the local village Primaries stayed open, including Feltwell. I mention this because at least one Feltwellian member lives in Canada and they have snow big-time but because it is an annual occurance it causes little disruption. Oh, the fickleness of the British weather!

As far as news is concerned the new Social Club Ctte is working hard to keep the Club open and is organising an awful lot of activities from Youth Discos to Quiz Nights, from live bands to Darts competitions. I hope they are successful in their endeavours and avoid closure. The demolition of the Youth Centre should begin shortly and will mark the end of a sad period in Feltwell's history but will, at least, remove an albatross from around the neck of the Parish Council for whom it has been a constant drain on finances. For those of you who would like to follow the exploits of Feltwell UTD FC then click on www.intheteam.com/feltwellunitedfc It's good to see that football is going strong in the village with teams as young as under 10s. I just hope that the cricket team will get as much support when the summer arrives.

One advance notice. In order to commemorate the 60th anniversary of VE day St Mary's PCC is planning to hold a display of wartime memorabilia so if any local Feltwellian has a gas mask or ration book etc or any distant Feltwellian has any photographs then please contact me.

On the website front I've now dispersed Toni Burr's photographs throughout the site depending upon their content. However I've still left the collection together at the address in last month's newsletter. Thanks to Rosemary for the information. A new article about Benjamin Bussey, a fitter with 75Sq, has been added to the RAF site together with an Air Show programme from 1952 to accompany the Air Show photos put up last month. Membership stands at 148.
