Written Records

May 1999

I begin this month with some sad news which is both belated and recent. Firstly, I have to report the death of Mr Charlie Baker last month. The contribution that he made to the village was immense; you may like to refresh your memories by visiting Charlie (and Maisie) Baker's 'Times Remembered' column on the site. This month saw the death of Mrs Charlotte Rolfe and also of Mr Sammy Rice. Charlotte died aged 100 and her memories are, fortunately, also stored on this site. She may have been physically blind when I interviewed her but what she saw in her 'mind's eye' were wonderful recollections. Unfortunately I never got to interview Sammy Rice even though he was on the list. Time beat me again.

On a more upbeat note we have several new members this month, all of whom are recorded on the members page, including our first New Zealander Bruce Rudland. Welcome Bruce and remember I want some more details about your family history.

I also want to report our second 'contact' this month. Mrs Toni Burr has been found by Mrs Rosemary Thorburn thanks to member Doreen Giniel after many years of being out of touch. Things like this make running the site worthwhile.

New items this month include part one of a complete Parish Councillor list from day 1 and also lists of the owners and landlords of both the Chequers and the Oak Hotel. Some new photos have been added to some pages - I'm not going to tell you where, you'll just have to go and have a search! Also I've been playing around with backgrounds and I hope you like the themed result. Let me know what you think. Finally the maps of the old shops are both finished and in place. Have a look and let me know if anything is missing or wrong.
