May 2001

Where did April go? Well, if you live in the UK, it got washed away by the rain! It seems as though we've had nothing but showers since last October. The awful weather has played havoc with Feltwell's roads, particularly the junction of Short Beck with Hill Street and I've just been told that the base of the village sign is showing serious frost damage. Another costly repair for the Parish Council no doubt. Talking of the Council we welcomed Mr Ensinger as our latest member last month. Last month was also the first birthday of our Millennium baby boy Tyler Titchmarsh - doesn't time fly?

I apologise for the slight delay in the delivery of this newsletter but I've been up to my eyes in coursework marking this last few weeks so something had to go and it was this months site update etc. My computer has also become extremely slow of late and working it at is more frustrating than it is enjoyable so I've gone out and ordered a replacement. Hopefully it will be installed before next month's deadline. I must apologise for the loss of Site 3 for a couple of weeks last month, apparently the server on which the site is stored broke and everything got lost. It took quite a few minutes to upload the entire site onto the replacement but hopefully everything is now working okay.

We have had a few new members this month, mainly ex servicemen stationed at either Feltwell or Lakenheath. I also discovered that Paul Waites is the Drug Free British Champion Power Lifter. Congratulations Paul. And members Don and Liz Gray who are bravely attempting to restore the Old Rectory to its former glory have just had a son so congratulations to you both.

As Parish Chairman I attended a meeting last week to discuss the stench coming form the Waste Disposal Site up Lodge Road. For ex-residents the 'tip' is on the site of the quarry. The cause is a new composing process that they have installed - without planning permission I might add - which, on a easterly wind day, produces a smell which permeates the entire village. They pre-empted the meeting by cleverly organising the installation of an improved process which, they say, will produce much less smell. Regardless of what they do the knives are out and both Feltwell and Methwold Parish Councils want the composting operation closed down.

Last Saturday I was a proud father as my daughter performed at what is becoming an annual event, the village talent show in the Methodist Church. The audience were entertained by performers both young and old with talents from singing to guitar via violin. A most successful evening.

Work to repair St Mary's church, particularly the Tower which is in danger of going the same way as St Nicholas tower, will in June. In total repairs will cost in the region of £88 000 of which only £60 000 has been promised in grants. The PCC has got many fund-raising events planned in order to raise the balance. I'm sure that they would be very grateful for donations from any Family Member. Sue and I have already done one quiz night for them at which just over £100 was raised. At this rate we'll only have to do another 280!

Before I sign off I must give thanks to my fellow webmaster (or is webmistress?) Susan Withers who has recently launched a revamped Feltwell Today site. If you go to http://www.feltwell.co.uk then you will have access to all of Feltwell's websites.
