May 2004

Well, it was a painful and very time consuming operation but the new RAF Feltwell website is up and running. Hopefully the scars of the excision are not too obvious in use but if you do find any problems please let me know. It is only when this sort of exercise is required that I truly realise just what a web the websites have become, in fact, if it weren't for Front Page's ability to show me the links in graphical view, I would have no problem in getting lost myself! By the way, the index page of the RAF site is the only page to use frames. If you visit it you will realise why I opted to use this facility. I expect the RAF Feltwell website to show the greatest growth in the future because, over the last few months, that has been the greatest topic of conversation in emails, thanks to the work of Dan Engle.

Regular visitors will note that I have added a button to 'Watchthatpage.com'. This website will automatically email you when the front page changes provided that you have clicked on the button and registered, which is free. I've been using this service for a couple of weeks now and found it to be excellent.

As far as the village is concerned things are coming into bloom and the wonderful greens of spring are more evident with each passing day. The few days of glorious sunshine a couple of weeks ago were the signal for many of us to get the lawnmower out. Instead of listening for the first Robin of the season I'm now conditioned into listening for the first lawnmower! I guess that our family members in the southern hemisphere are considering putting the lawnmower away, or has it been so dry that the grass simply died instead of growing? Let me know.

Apart from the blooming of Spring things in the village have been very quiet. The Wilton Road traffic problem still rumbles on. The American authorities, in an effort to reduce the queuing at the Base entrance, have decided that there will be a one-way flow of traffic through the Base as from Monday for the period 6-9am. I'm now waiting for the complaints about the increase in traffic through the village as it leaves through the other gate! At least a willingness to talk and try to find a local solution is evident from those involved in running the Base. Let's hope the solution works and, more importantly, that the effort is appreciated.

I've had a few interesting emails this last month. One from a gentleman in Prague asking to use a photograph of a Wellington in a book he is writing, one from Public Affairs at RAF Mildenhall asking to (possibly) use some photographs in a special magazine to celebrate the 70th anniversary of RAF Mildenhall and one from a gentleman pointing out that the website fails to mention the 204 Signals Unit that was here in the 1965 - 1972/3 period. I promptly wrote back asking him to fill the gap and he has promised to submit an article. Let us never forget that the site is a repository of information relating to Feltwell and that, for my sanity, I don't do any research!
